Spiddal, a small village, 12 miles from Galway City, is part of Connemara, or, 'Cois na Mara' which translates as 'Beside the sea'. Spiddal is located on the edge of the famed Galway Bay, with views extending along the Clare Coast to the Cliffs of Moher, and on to the Three Aran Islands out in the Atlantic Ocean.
Spiddal is also part of the Gaeltacht, the traditional Irish speaking area of Ireland. The Irish language and Culture contributes to Spiddal's character. The name Spiddal is an Anglecization of 'An Oispideal' which literally translates to 'the hospital'.
